Just relax: How to Wind Down from Your Day

You go go go all day long; how do you unwind and decompress to make sure your life stays balanced?

As promised in the video, here’s more information about awareness meditation.

But just because that works for me, it doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you. What’s important is that you find a healthy way to shift your focus from work. This can be particularly challenging if you have a home office, and even more challenging if your home office is part of another room, such as in your living room or dining room.

If your office is in a space shared with other activities, you might want to consider putting up a shoji screen to create a visual division between your work space and your dining/living space.  Some people create a space in their bedrooms for their office, but for me that would be a last resort since even with a divider, I’d know it’s there….just waiting to pounce on me the minute I awaken.

Back to relaxing. A lot of people use television, and if that’s what works best for you, then so be it.  I would suggest something a little more interactive, though, like reading, exercising, or socializing with friends.  Yes, some people do unwind better around other people….something I find a bit amazing, but I know it works well for some!

What’s most important is to figure out what works for you and deliberately take the time to do it. I’m sure the concept of relaxing isn’t new to you, but do you consciously make sure you’re de-stressing everyday?  It’s very easy to slide from one task to another, and then realize it’s time to go to sleep, without making room for downtime.  You’ll find yourself to be more refreshed and ready to begin the next day if you end the one before with a bit of time to decompress.

How do you relax after a long day?

I usually relax by watching TV or reading.

Reading is one of my favorites, although I recently discovered the Heroes series on Netflix and am loving it!

I wind down by taking a walk outside to look at the garden and then sit and watch the sunset with a cool drink.

It sounds like you might live near the water, Barbara! I used to love gardening when I lived in Florida.
